Over time, gaps between the teeth can grow larger, and that gap you may have had as a child may no longer seem as ‘cute.’ Fortunately, gaps, spacing, and cosmetic issues can be treated conservatively at Orange and Magnolia Dental Studio in Costa Mesa, California. The secret to quickly, economically, and predictably correcting these cosmetic imperfections is composite dental (teeth) bonding in the highly capable hands of our talented “dental artist”/cosmetic dentist, Dr. Joyce Kahng.
We are pleased to give you a glimpse into the ease and beauty of dental bonding courtesy of a few of the common questions that we get asked about this transformative procedure.
“Bonding” describes a cosmetic dentistry process in which the front exteriors of “prepared” natural teeth are prepared and coated with a dental material that matches the tooth’s color. Once the material has been secured, gaps and other cosmetic concerns are covered up and effectively disappear!
Composite refers to a resin (plastic) material. The material may be formulated with glass-like particles to more accurately mimic the appearance of enamel. Dr. Kahng can color-match the composite so that it blends in with the rest of the tooth and the neighboring, unaltered teeth.
Bonding may be used to address excess spaces between the teeth and other forms of misalignment that do not require orthodontic treatment. We may also recommend bonding to address chips, small cracks, and other “wear and tear signs.” Bonding may also be appropriate for damaged or old fillings and stubborn internal stains that are not good candidates for professional teeth whitening. We use pliable resin to reshape irregularly contoured teeth and to add height to a worn-down or disproportionately sized tooth.

Bonding is a quick process. Dr. Kahng can complete the procedure in just two visits. The first visit involves thoroughly examining your mouth and consulting with you to understand better your goals and preferences and what you want to change about your smile. If your mouth is healthy and disease-free, the teeth designated for bonding are gently buffed and conditioned to ensure a strong bond between the composite and tooth structure. The prepared and color-match resin is then applied directly to the teeth. The composite is expertly reshaped. Once everything looks great and your cosmetic concerns are no longer visible, it is bonded or hardened securely to the tooth.
